Here are a few FREE softwares that you can use to keep your computer up longer without having to re-install windows! http://endscene.net/images/smiliesgood/smile.gif
Links marked with a star (*) are not free, some of them might have a trial of some sorts. Kerio firewall works after the 30 trial, only with limited functions.
Firewalls:

Not an anti-virus, but a great general computer cleaner (temp files, registry, etc.)
CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com)
and the anti-spyware I trust more than Spybot S&D
SUPERAntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com)
Also, there's a pesky virus floating around that most general anti-virus programs have problems cleaning. If you get "Antivirus 2009" or any of it's counterparts installed on your computer, just run
Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org)
I recommend running the last one regardless as you may have something on your system that's not so prevalent.
If you have any specific problems, I'll be glad to help via PM.

You could try adding ram. Th first step is to see how much your computer could hold. Try googling your computers model number to get the specs. Then you can go into control panel, and should be able to find system information there and find out how much you have installed. A computer 4 years old could need to replaced. My dad had a computer with 1 gb ram max. Thats just slow. 2 gb is ok but 4 is elite. Anything after that you would want a 64bit Vista.
If your computer has a full hard drive, it wont be able to defragment. You will have to clear some space. Also I would suggest closing any programs running in the background like aim or yahoo messenger before proceeding.

Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html)
Though it's not really necessary, you could download and run the above program (assuming you have the space) to find out pretty much all your system specs. With this, you could find out what kind of motherboard you have and how many memory slots you have available/what's installed currently.

my comp is prob 4yrs old now...still works fineIt really depends on what you bought at the time. My computer is also about 4 years old but I built my computer to last (upgradeable slots, etc.).

I use avg for virus and then adware for the other crap. Both my computers are still going strong with no problems.

^ Both good programs. I just liked their older versions better than the new ones. They changed and so did I.
