The PlayStation 3 can already do plenty of things besides play video games... but today some comments from Sony's New Zealand frontman Warwick Light apparently confirm a rumor we've been hearing about for some time: incoming PVR support for PS3.
Kotaku's got an excerpt up (http://kotaku.com/gaming/pal-bosses-speak/ps3-to-get-dvr-functions-digital-tuner-in-2008-284606.php) from this interview (http://www.stuff.co.nz/thepress/4146820a9175.html) with Light over on Kiwi newspaper website The Press. During a discussion about DLNA (Digital Living Networked Alliance), Light is quoted as saying:
"...we're also hoping next year -- about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service (expected to be in March) -- to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder."
A few weeks ago MCV had predicted (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/27815/PS3-surprises-ready-for-Leipzig) that Sony might just surprise gamers by unveiling a PVR service based off a Freeview TV (http://www.freeview.co.uk/home) backbone at the Leipzig games conference. Now with New Zealand going on the record it's looking a lot closer to certainty. Here's hoping that a Sony/Freeview service can make its way across the ocean to to non PAL territories as well. It's not known at this time exactly how Freeview PVR functionality might work on a PS3. An external tuner device wired in by one those spare USB ports, perhaps?
