No one loves Super Mario Sunshine -- not even Nintendo. At the company's E3 press conference this morning, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime totally harshed it by calling Super Mario Galaxy the first real Mario game since 1996's Super Mario 64.
That's pretty brutal for Sunshine, but it does speak well for Galaxy's potential. Although it was only given a cursory showing at the conference -- especially compared to the lengthy demo for exercise game Wii Fit -- it looks promising. Sharp-eyed viewers were given a glimpse of never-before-seen footage of the game, including new environments, new powers, and more giant boss encounters. Mario leaped his way across tiny planetoids, among bizarre free-floating geometrical objects in space, through caverns and waterfalls, and across huge sliding floors with differently shaped holes stamped into them. At one point, he donned a bee costume and ran around a giant flower collecting colorful shapes. And among the sampling of boss encounters seen was a massive version of carnivorous plant Petey Piranha, who sprouted from a seed on his own-mini sphere. Mario grasped one of the plant's roots and launched it into the air to damage Petey with the recoil. Ouch!
The best news about Galaxy, though, is that despite its elusiveness -- Nintendo hasn't revealed a peep about the game since last year's E3 -- it's on-track for a November 12 release date in the U.S.
