After continued weak NPD showings for the PlayStation 3 in April, Sony's Dave Karraker admitted that lack of software was a huge problem. Of course, all that talk doesn't help when the number of games -- much less impressive ones -- still hasn't gone up particularly quickly. Good things may come to those with the patience to wait, though.
Reuters is reporting that Sony is planning for a flood of releases this fiscal year to make up for the system's early-life drought. Just how much? Speaking to the Nikkei business newspaper, Sony president Kaz Hirai says that, between now and the end of the 2007 fiscal year in March 2008, there will be approximately 380 games released for the PS3 -- 200 boxed retail ones and 180 download-only titles on the PlayStation Network.
Hirai went on to say Sony is now working with publishers on marketing to help ensure that new games come swiftly and in great number. According to the article, there are currently 60 retail releases and 50 PSN titles for the PlayStation 3, but the PSN number, at least, is very inaccurate, even if you include Japan-only and PS1 games in the list. Also, Hirai's numbers are supposedly only new releases between now and the end of the fiscal year. If Sony can live up to such a lofty promise, we're game.
